ZANZIBAR, TANZANIA – Abundant Village is proud to announce the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding with local partner Mwani Zanzibar to formally support the launch of the ReGen Zanzibar initiative, a major marine and community program supported by the organisation’s Abundant Blue portfolio. This partnership marks a significant milestone as Abundant Village expands from land-based programs to marine ecosystems, with a core focus on restoring coastal environments and supporting communities that rely on them.

ReGen Zanzibar is designed to respond to one of the most urgent needs of our time – the protection and regeneration of our oceans, while linking regenerative enterprise with the empowerment of coastal communities who depend on them. Oceans regulate the planet’s climate, support biodiversity, and provide livelihoods to billions. Their degradation has far-reaching impacts. This project is a direct response, rooted in community leadership, scientific integrity, and a regenerative economic approach.

With operations across the Zanzibar Archipelago, ReGen Zanzibar will focus on:
• Coral reef restoration and nursery development
• Seagrass mapping and protection
• Mangrove rehabilitation and replanting
• Research into blue carbon and ecosystem data systems
• Seaweed farming and sustainable circular economy pilots
• Community governance and locally led marine protection
• Women’s leadership, education and youth engagement

Abundant Village’s role is to help build capacity, and support the delivery of long term, measurable impact. By bringing in technical expertise, research partnerships and implementation resources, this collaboration reflects a shared belief in solutions that are not only effective but owned by the communities who live alongside the ecosystems we aim to protect.

“We are incredibly proud to support this launch with Mwani Zanzibar and stand beside the local teams driving this work,” said Briana Evigan, CEO of Abundant Village. “This is a defining moment for us as an organisation and a reflection of the partnerships, trust and values we believe will help regenerate both nature and society.”

“This partnership marks an important step for us,” said Klaartje Schade, Co-Founder of Mwani Zanzibar. “Mwani Zanzibar was the first to employ women seaweed farmers in East Africa and support their transition into skilled value-addition roles. ReGen Zanzibar allows us to deepen the connection between nature-positive incomes while strengthening our long-term commitment to restoring the ecosystems that are vital to the wellbeing of our coastal communities.”

Abundant Village is actively inviting mission aligned partners and philanthropic supporters to join in this next chapter of impact along the coastlines of East Africa and into the Indian Ocean.
