Chizarira National Park, Zimbabwe
Social impact for conservation outcomes.
Abundant Village has established a long-term partnership with Defend in Zimbabwe’s Chizarira National Park, one of Africa’s most critical biodiversity landscapes. While Defend leads the overall management and protection of the park, Abundant Village serves as the specialist partner responsible for community development and social impact. Together, a foundation has been laid for a future where people and wildlife advance side by side, creating a living example of conservation driven by human progress and shared prosperity.
Through this partnership, Abundant Village and Defend have achieved the key phases required to build a long-term footprint in the area. Teams have been established, systems are in place, and engagement across the buffer communities has begun to transform local participation in conservation. The partnership now stands ready to expand its social impact work across Chizarira’s surrounding villages, connecting livelihoods to the park’s protection and ensuring that conservation delivers real benefits for the people who depend on the landscape most.

Long-term Vision
Sustainable model for Africa’s protected areas
"When people thrive, so do conservation efforts. With Defend, we are turning that vision into a living reality at Chizarira National Park."
From Subsistence to Sustainability
Working alongside Defend, Abundant Village has set in motion a comprehensive plan to help communities transition from subsistence living toward regenerative, self-sustaining economies. The groundwork has been laid for regenerative agriculture, community gardens, and nutrient-rich crop systems that will improve nutrition, restore degraded soils, and reduce pressure on wildlife areas. Farmers will be supported through training, access to seed and tools, and guaranteed purchase agreements that create a dependable local market linked to the park’s food systems.
This foundation extends into enterprise development and skills training. Abundant Village is helping families and youth prepare to launch small community-based businesses aligned with conservation, including eco-crafts, supply-chain services, and microenterprise ventures. These programs are designed to reduce economic vulnerability, create new income opportunities, and build pride in protecting local ecosystems.
Education, Women's Leadership, and Youth Empowerment
Education and empowerment remain central to Abundant Village’s mission. Plans have been established to support schools through improved infrastructure, classroom resources, and environmental education programs that connect young people directly to the wildlife and ecosystems of Chizarira. Women’s leadership programs will build pathways for mothers and daughters to engage in decision-making, community enterprise, and resource management, helping ensure that social progress moves hand in hand with conservation.
The youth of Chizarira’s buffer communities are also a major focus. Through mentorship, sport, and cultural programs, Abundant Village aims to channel energy and creativity toward new opportunities in conservation and local development. This investment in youth lays the groundwork for a generation that views the protection of nature as a path to empowerment and prosperity.
Linking Community Wellbeing to Conservation
By combining Defend’s operational leadership inside Chizarira with Abundant Village’s expertise in social impact, a holistic model has been established where human wellbeing directly reinforces environmental protection. Early initiatives such as water access, solar lighting, and local food programs have already demonstrated how community trust and participation are essential to safeguarding biodiversity. With the core structure now in place, Abundant Village is positioned to scale its programs and attract new partners to help deliver measurable outcomes in livelihoods, education, and sustainable development.

A Model for Africa's Protected Areas
This partnership is shaping a new standard for conservation in Africa, one built on collaboration between ecological management and human advancement. Defend provides the systems and field operations that secure the park, while Abundant Village anchors the social and economic frameworks that make that security last. Together, the two organizations are establishing a replicable model that proves the protection of nature, and the prosperity of communities are inseparable goals.
Together, these initiatives are designed to align human prosperity with ecosystem protection, ensuring that the surrounding communities of Chizarira are direct beneficiaries of the park’s success. This approach forms a cornerstone of Defend’s long-term vision, creating shared value between people and nature and laying the social groundwork for enduring conservation outcomes.
